THE FLOATING POOL
The famous Piscine Deligny, a floating swimming pool moored to
the banks of the Seine, was first built in the late 1700s as a
cleaner option for swimming than the river. It was rebuilt many
times over the years, becoming bigger and more luxurious each
time, finally measuring almost 30,000 square feet, with 340
changing cabins and 13 private salons, one reserved for princes.
It was considered one of the coolest places to see and be seen in
Paris – until it mysteriously sank one evening in July 1993. Af-
ter a decade of mourning, plans for its replacement have been
approved by the city officials. The new floating pool is tenta-
tively scheduled to open by 2006 at the foot of the National Li-
brary (Bibliothèque Nationale-François Mitterand) in the 13th.
